Story : 
The film revolves around three characters, Veera (Vikram), Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Dev Pratap Sharma (Pruthvi Raj). Dev falls in love with Ragini, a spunky classical dancer who is as unconventional as him. They get married and he takes up his new post in Ananthapur, a small town in Andhra Pradesh. A town where the word of law is not the police but Veera, a tribal who has, over the years, put the entire laws of the land under his belt. Dev knows that the key to bringing order to any place is to vanquish the big fish; in this case, Veera. In one stroke Dev manages to rip open Veera's word, and set in motion a chain of events which will claim lives, change fortunes.
Broken down in spirits as his happiness is completely lost through his close blood relation, it's turn for him to retaliate. It is just as you expected as Veera kidnaps Raghini only to find the justice in his own way.
But then, things are completely gonna be different as the journey that upholds in second hour with more characters involved in this drama will surely take you to a new world.
At the end for the audience watching the film, there will be nothing defined as WHO WAS WRONG and WHO WAS RIGHT? It is just as it happened with Akira Kurusowa's RASHOMON. The ultimate decision about the right judgment lies in the hands of no one, but you. Might be for the situation, there may be few debates popping up sooner after the show is over as few people may advocate for Veera, while others Raghini and Dev.
Direction :
Villain is not a movie, it is a virtual world created by Mani Ratnam. Each and every frame in the movie is etched with human emotions. Characters in the movie are designed in a manner that sometimes Audience even looks at the good side of the evil. Mani Ratnam shot the major part of the movie inner and nearby locations of waters has to be appreciated. Especially the scene where Veera proposes Ragini is awesome. Mani Ratnam is the Valmiki of this new Ramayana.
Cinematography by Santhosh Sivan is splendid in each and every frame of the movie.
Music :
Back Ground score by AR Rehman deserves a special mention. Every score of his has given soul to the movie but in some parts of the movie it looked as if ARR had used the back ground score of Guru. I wonder why.
Performances :
Vikram steals the show as Veera. Mani Ratnam entirely brought out a new actor out of him. This is his best performance till date.Vikram's body language speaks more than his dialogues which is actually required too.
It's a dare attempt by Aish in choosing a less glam role. She impressed me a lot in Guru and did not let me down this time too. Aishwarya Rai gets more footage just as she emotes well wedged between confusions on finalizing her life's way.
Prithvi Raj donned the role of a tough cop very well but his performance was down shadowed by Vikram
Priyamani(Vennela) deserves a special mention. Prabhu(Singaraju) and kathik(Gnanam) performed well in their short roles
Final Say :
Plot of the movie is Predictable. Slow narration in the first half of the movie makes the audience restless. Entertainment quotient in the movie is all most zero which becomes a hindrance for all sections of audience to enjoy.Dubbing in Telugu should have been a lot better.
Nevertheless, Villain is an epic by Mani Ratnam, Let's take a pause and take a bow to this master magician.

Mani has failed to express his ideas and he is unable to narrate the story. According to me the movie is failure. screen play and picturazation is good, part from that there is no story.
